Report: Anthony Horgan.

It is with regret to announce that the Youghal United Junior team is to be withdrawn from the league with immediate effect. The squad has been going through some rough times recently in trying to fill a team at weekends especially on Sunday mornings.  A good management team was in place in Pat McCarthy , John Heaphy and Ray Fraser and the committee are at a loss as to why the players didn’t give them committment at the weekends. Also , I would like to add that at the begining of the season a delegate team from the club went to meet with the Munster Senior League board to put a case forward and convince them that the Juniors would see out the season if they allowed us entry into the league as this is not the first time this has happened. Now the club is left with egg on it’s face again and in the forseeable future will find it impossible to enter a junior team. It has cost the club in fine’s for not fulfilling fixtures and also lost a bond that was put up at the start of the season. In conclusion everyone is dissapointed with the players involved and finally I would like to thank Pat McCarthy ,  John Heaphy and Ray Fraser for their time and effort.

Youghal United 2- 4 Ringmahon Rangers

Report: Anthony Horgan

After a good win last week the boys will be bitterly disappointed with this defeat at home to a team which they feel they could and should have won. Ringmahon scored the fourth at the death after Youghal pressed for the equaliser. Andrew Hennessey and David Kenneally got on the score sheet. They will now go back to the drawing board and regroup for the coming games.

Heartbreak for Youghal Juniors as they crash out of the league cup at the quarter final stage

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Report & Picture: Anthony Horgan.

Youghal United 1 – Carrigaline United 3 Ardrath Park Wed 22nd Oct 19:45.

It was a disapointing finish for the lads in the quarter final of the league cup as they went down 3-1 to a Carrigaline team who play in a division above them in the premier junior league.

The game was only minutes old when Damien Linehan in the Youghal goal was called into action to tap over a header from a corner kick. Minutes later at the other end Tony Dempsey tried his luck from long range only to see his effort to be picked up by the keeper. Carrigaline did have the ball in the Youghal net after 10 minutes only for the referee to blow for offside.

The next 20 mins saw Youghal press on and have a load of long range chances but none really troubled the Carrigaline keeper. On the rare occasion of a break away from the visitors they nearly took the lead , good play down the right wing to the end line and a ball pulled back across the square found the centre forward whos shot was just wide.

Youghal finished the half very strong and had a number of good chances to take the lead. The first falling to Tony Dempsey when David Kenneally linked up with Anthony Daly who whipped in a cross only for Tony’s contact to be slight and fell into the keepers hands. But with the last kick of the half Barry McCarthy unleashed a bullet from the edge of the box only for it to hammer back off the upright with everyone beaten including the keeper. Half time 0-0.

Fives minutes into the second half Ian Scott won a free at the edge of the box , Barry McCarthy stepped up only to fire over the bar. Carrigaline took the lead on 57 mins when their forward ran the ball down the right wing and before he knew it he was inside the box and beat two defenders unchallenged , his effort deflected off a defender and found its way to the back of the net. This rattled Youghal but to their credit battled on to try and break the away team down. It eventually came on 75 mins when Ian Scott was upended in the area when trying to create some space to shoot , the referee pointed to the spot without hesitation. Again, Barry McCarthy stepped up and shot low to the right hand corner to level the game.

Both teams going for it now and Carrigaline were unlucky with a header off a corner was saved by Damien. It seemed to be all the away team piling on the pressue in the final minutes and they were awarded when they found the net in the 91st minute. A free crossed into the box caused all sorts of confusion and again the ball found the net off a Youghal defender. Youghal pushed one more time but could not break down the Carrigaline defence. Carrigaline in turn sealed victory in the 93 minute with a penalty kick after the forward was fouled in the box.

Youghal can take real heart out of this game remembering they were playing a team in a division above them. They showed they could compete with the best of them and lets hope they can take this form into the league games.

Juniors, Cup Quarterfinal Preview

Youghal United v Carrigaline

Wednesday, October 22nd, Ardrath Park

Kick-off 7.45

It has beeen a mixed start to the season for United, who got off to a great start when they had a 1-0 win over Midleton in the group stages of the League Cup, with the wining goal coming from Tony Dempsey.

This was a typical local derby at Knockgriffin Park, and Youghal had to endure a lot of pressure from the home side, but United stood firm and came away with a great victory.

United followed this up with a even better win the following Tuesday at Ardrath Park, with two early goals from Peter Geary and Barry McCarthy was the backbone of their win over St. Mary’s. This was a very good game and after thier win over Midleton, United were full of confidence, which showed with the early  goals. St. Mary’s did get back into the game with a couple of goals but a David Keanely goal put Youghal in the Quarterfinal.

Carrigaline also had two good wins in their group. They started with a 3-1 win over Tramore and followed this up with a 1-0 win over Ringmahon.

Carrigaline are a division above Youghal and mayby with a bit more experience this might be a factor in their favour, however Youghal, coming off a good 2-2 draw on Sunday against Glasheen in the league, have home adavantage plus playing under lights which should add to the occasion.

If Youghal can play the way they did in their first two games they could find themselves in the semi-finals which would be a great boost to them for the rest of the season.

Juniors, Glasheen Park, Sunday October 19th

Report: Gene Crotty

Glasheen 2- 2 Youghal United

Despite poor weather conditions with heavy wind and rain both teams have to be given credit for a vey good game. Youghal fell behind midway through the first half when Glasheen got the opener after some good play.  It did not take long to level the score when Tony Dempsey was on hand to score and should have given United the lead two minutes later when through on goal his shot was saved by the keeper. It was not Dempsey’s day as just on the blow of half time he had another chance to put united ahead but once again with only the keeper to beat his shot came off the keeper to safety.

The rain at this stage was not helping either side and in a very even game it was turned on its head with 15 minutes to go when Glasheen were awarded a penalty which baffled the united players as to why it was awarded. The resulting spot kick saw Glasheen go 2 – 1 ahead  but united composed themselves and David kenneally grabbed a point from the game with a late goal. All the good work could have been wiped out as Glasheen were unlucky when they had a shot come back off the post in the last minute. If the lads had taken the chances which fell to them they would have got all three points but still will be happy with the one they got.

The juniors are back in action on this coming Wednesday when they are at home to Carrigaline in the league cup quarter final at Ardrath park kick off is at 7.45.

Youghal United 1 – 4 Brooklodge

There were less than 3 minutes gone in this game and United found themselves two goals down in what turned out to be a first half they never got going in.

After that shock start United composed themselves and began to get into the game but Brooklodge just seemed more awake and scored two more goals before the break.

The second half saw a better team performance and United did have a good few chanches in front of goal but failed to take them.

Being four goals up Brooklodge went off the boil in the second half and it was Andrew Hennessy who did get one back for United.

United are missing key players at the moment and hopefully they can get them back soon.

United are in action in the quarter-final of the league cup next Friday night, September 19th,  at Adrath Park when they play Carrigaline.

Report: Gene Crotty

Crosshaven 2 – 0 Youghal United

It was a disappointing start to United’s Junior league campaign when they came away from Crosshaven with a 2-0 defeat.

The home side started  brightly and it took United a bit to settle into the game. There were not too many scoring  chances from both sides in the first half,  but the deadlock was broken in the 52nd minute when Crosshaven scored and began to control the game.

Stephen Frazer could have put United on level terms in the 68th minute when his header just went wide. One minute later United were two down when from a rebound penalty after Stephen Kelly in the Youghal goal made a great save and did so twice more before the end of the game to keep the score at 2-0.

United suffered a double injury blow in the space of a few minutes when first Gary Daly went off with a finger injury and from a clash of heads Stephen Frazer also had to be replaced with a head injury.

This was far from the full strength side and when they get it hopefully things will get better for them.

United are due to play Carrigaline in the league cup semi-final at Ardrath Park this coming Thursday night.
