Youghal United 1 – 1 Leeds AET Youghal win 4-2 on penalties

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Report : Anthony Horgan.

Another great result for the lads here this time in the beamish cup as they knock out first division Leeds who are battling to be promoted to the premier division. The Youghal goal scored by Brendan O’ Sullivan who helped his side into a penalty shot out and this time came out on the right side earning a quarter final tie yet to be drawn. Youghal previously lost a shootout earlier this season in the intermediate cup away to Ringmahon so it was nice to reverse fortunes. Earlier in this cup competition Youghal defeated Carrigaline another first division side 2-1. If anything it shows that the senior team can hold their own against teams in the higher division. Below is a look at the division 2 league table and with only two games remaining we hope to clinch the promotion spot.

Under 13 boys Youghal United 5-1 Greenmount.

A good solid performance by Youghal who were two nil up at half time despite some very poor refereeing in favour of Greenmount. The lads had an excellent goal disallowed and a couple of corner descisions given as goal kicks. They kept to the task in hand and Jake Power scored from a great cross by Mathew Murphy and shortly afterwards scored his second after a goal mouth scramble for us to go in 2 up at the break. In the second half Jake bagged another to secure his hat trick via the penalty spot. Greenmount got one back but Danny Walsh resumed penalty taking duties to go 4-1 up after Colin Keenaghan was taken down in the box. Alex ledingham scored to complete a great win for the boys!

Under 12 Girls Youghal United 0-2 Lakewood.

The girls bowed out in the cup competition to a well experienced and established Lakwood side. The girls can keep their heads held high and regroup to do better next time. Well done to all involved.

Youghal United 1 – 0 Nufarm Athletic

The boys needed to be on top form here for the duration of the game as Nufarm are excellent opposition. Youghal started well and were on top for most of the game only to be caught offside on a number of occasions as Nufarm were a well organised outfit at the back. On the other hand Youghal were unlucky not to take the lead on a number of occasions when Danny Walsh hit the upright and Ronan O’ Sullivan had a good effort tipped onto the crossbar. Ronan however did pop up to decide this match with a great strike.  Overall this was a good performance by the whole team and a special mention to Connor Finn who stepped in to replace our regular keeper.

Youghal United 1 – 0 Buttevant

This was a very close contest throughout with Buttevant having a well organised defence who played the offside very well. The only goal of the game came by Cian Daly who won all three points for the lads. Best for: Ronan o’ Sullivan, Ollie Dempsey and Danny Walsh.

Nufarm Athletic 3 – 3 Youghal United

United had to come back three times in this game to share the points in what turned out to be a thriler of a game and only for the great performance of Dillon Mason in the Youghal goal Nufarm cold have taken all the points.

It was the home side who took an early lead in this game but United did not take long to get back on level terms when Patrick Daly scored for Youghal.

Nufarm thought they had gone back in front but Daly was on hand when he kicked off the line, but a few minutes later they did go ahead again but just before half time United were back on level terms again when Jake Power scored the first of his two goals.

It was Nufarm who started the better in the second half and had some good chances but the Youghal keeper in top form but could do nothing when the home side took the lead for the third time and looked like they had the game won.

But once again Youghal dug deep and Jake Power was their hero when he got Youghal’s third goal which gave them a share of the points in a game that all the Youghal players can be proud of.

Youghal United 2 – 2 Springfield Ramblers

In a very close game between two well matched teams, Ramblers had the better of the first 15 minutes of the game, but it was United who struck first with a goal in the 20th minute from Sean daly. Jake Power doubled the lead just before the break and United were looking the better team.

Ramblers were back in the game early in the second half when they scored a good goal. United had a few chanches to wrap up the game and just when it looked like they were going to take the points a very late goal from Springfield gave them a share of the points.

Best for Youghal were Jake Power and Dillon Masson.
