Senior Men — Keane Cup

Report: Anthony Horgan

Youghal United 0 – 2 Tramore Athletic

The lads came into this game on the back of a 5-0 defeat away to premier division side Avondale United at the weekend so they were looking for a good performance over the result. Tonight the lads face first division side Tramore Athletic who play in a division above them. Apart from one or two hiccups Youghal can take a lot of positives from this game.

12 mins in Robert Cronin was fouled at the edge of the box after making a good run down the left wing, Michael John Hennessy steeped up and hit a superb free kick off the far post with everyone beaten. Brendan O’ Sullivan was dangerous in every attack with his energy and enthusiasm. However Youghal found themselves one down after 25mins when Tramore broke down the right wing and put in what looked like a tame cross but the defenders never dealt with it and the forward scored unchallenged. This was a blow for the boys but they stuck to the task in hand and battled on.

P. O’Connor won possession in midfield and passed to M.J. Hennessy who in turn found P. Moylan on the edge of the box. Paul was just about to pull the trigger only to be closed down by the defender. Moments later Darren Hennessy had a long range effort go over the bar. Just before half time Youghal were going forward in droves gaining a lot of corner kicks but the resulting corners came to nothing as we never got on the end of any of them. Out of one of Youghal’s corners Tramore broke and with two passes the forward got behind the Youghal defence and only for some brave defending by the keeper D. Curren and the left back A. Kelly the home side would have been two down at the break.

Half time 0-1.

The second half was only minutes old when Tramore got their second, a ball wasn’t dealt with by the keeper spilling it to M. O’Connell who slotted home. Youghal could have thrown in the towel but didn’t, they worked even harder and had plenty of ball only for the final pass to go astray.

The introduction of M. Clohesy at centre back and moving Sean Kenneally to midfield with P. O’Connor giving way regigged the Youghal team. Also a straight swap when G. Kelly came in for R. Cronin on the left wing seemed to give Youghal a freshness. 63 mins in Youghal had their best chance after Brendan O’Sullivan put across a great ball and Paul Moylan out jumped the defence only to see his header go narrowly over the cross bar.

Soon after Mike Sczepankewiez had a long range shot go over when he tried his luck. Shane Ryan came on for Paul Hennessy on the right wing after 70 mins. Youghal pressed for the remainder of the game and another half chance fell to Paul Moylan when he broke the offside trap only to see the defender get back on terms and close him down.

Although the lads lost 2-0 this was a spirited performance and this is the end of the road in the league cup, all attention will now be focused on the upcoming league campaign. Best of luck to all involved here and here’s hoping we can go one step further in trying to gain promotion to the 1st division this year!

Team: D. Curren, D. Hennessy, S. Kenneally, M. Sczepankewiez, A. Kelly, R. Cronin, P. O’Connor, M.J. Hennessy, P. Hennessy, P. Moylan, B. O’Sullivan.

Subs: M. Clohesy, G. Kelly, S. Ryan

U16 Schoolboy Update

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Report: Gene Crotty

Youghal United U16s played their second friendly in the build up to the new season when they travelled to Cobh to play Springfield.

Though United lost out in this game to the home side 2-0, this was a much improved performance from the team.

Despite the hot conditions, it was a was a very confident first half display from United, who made severial  changes in this game from the starting line up against Leeside.

Springfield came more into the game in the second half and two late golas gave them the vvictory which was a bit harsh on United.

United are back in action on Sunday afternoon when they play at home to Abbeyside of Dungarvan. K-off is at 3pm.

The first league game is on Saturday, September 6th when they travel to lakewood for a 10.30 kick-off.

Junior Men — League Cup

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Report: Anthony Horgan

Youghal United 2 - St. Mary’s 1

The lads had no time to site back and admire their 1-0 win against Midleton last Friday night as they were in action again tonight Tues 26th Aug against St.Mary’s at Ardrath Park.

Both Midleton and St.Mary’s are in the premier division of the Junior section while Youghal United are in the first division so this puts these two wins in perspective as now they qualify for the quarter final of the league cup winning against superior opposition.

Youghal were two nil up at half time with goals by Barry McCarthy who got through the defense after a mix up between the defenders and the other was gifted to Peter Geary when the keeper failed to clear his lines properly. Youghal conceded one late in the match but hung on for another great win.

This team has proved it can compete with the best and now we await their assault on the league. It’s the first time we have had a Junior team in a number of years and its back to exciting times for the club to see a full complement of teams competing.

Team: H. Daly, D. Sheul, S. Fraser, B. Smith, S. Coakley, E. Kelly, D. Kenneally, B. McCarthy, J. Mason, P. Geary, T. Dempsey

Subs: A. Hennessey, G. Cotter, G. Daly

Senior Men — Keane Cup

Report: Gene Crotty

Avondale United 5 – Youghal United 0

Despite the scoreline in this game this was a spirited display from Youghal United. The side found  themselves 2 goals down in the first 15 minutes but had a chance to reduce that deficit, but a Paul Moylen penalty was saved by the Avondale keeper. United did have other chances in the game but failed to take them. Avondale added three more goals in the second half to secure the points.

United are home on this Thursday, August 28th when they play Ringmahon Rangers in their second Keane Cup game. Kick-off at Ardrath Park is at 7pm.

Junior Men — League Cup

Report: Anthony Horgan

Midleton 0 – Youghal United 1

This was a first time outing for Pat McCarthy and John Heaphy’s young lads who only got together a number of weeks ago. Numbers at training are excellent with everyone fighting for their positions.

This was going to be a very tough affair against an experienced Midleton team who had a couple of last year’s senior team lining out. Midleton settled the better of the two with the lads backs to the wall early on but the defence of S. Coakley, S. Fraser, B. Smith and D. Sheul stood firm and dealt with anything the home side could throw at them. The backline helped by the ever vocal Ger Cotter who commanded his area to perfection. A rare attack at the other end resulted in a couple of half chances by E. Kelly and T. Dempsey who worked extremely hard in trying to carve out a chance.

The midfield too were stretched at times but to their credit never gave up in what looked liked one way traffic. G.Daly, J.Mason, D.Kenneally and I.Scott closed down and harassed at every opportunity and in attack tried to put the boys up front through on goal. Half time 0-0.

The second half begun with two chances narrowly wide by Midleton and this seemed to spur on the Youghal lads who after the half time team talk regrouped and began to get on top from midfield on. Attacks were more frequent and the boys started to get behind the Midleton’s defence putting in some good crosses.

On 55mins J. Cronin replaced the tired J. Mason who ran himself into the ground. The opener wasn’t far away now as it was all Youghal in attack and it came in the fashion of some good work down the left by S. Coakley and I. Scott with the eventual pass coming from D. Kenneally finding T. Dempsey on the edge of the box. Tony caught the ball on the half volley looping the ball over the keeper to much of the away squad’s delight.

That goal rocked the home side who never really recovered and Youghal drove on where they came very close again when another chance by Tony Dempsey was blocked by the defender. Two more substitutions A. Hennessey for S. Coakley on 66mins and B. McCarthy for G. Daly on 72mins kept Youghal ticking over. Barry McCarthy began a great move when his superb cross field ball found Tony Dempsey who’s first touch squared across to John Cronin who seemed to be upended in the area only for the referee to ignore his claims. In the closing stages Youghal’s defence seemed to fall asleep when Midleton got in behind them to shoot just wide of the far post.

Youghal hung on for a deserving win at the end and from what I saw of this team they will cause more upsets in the coming league campaign. They have a good disciplined back four midfielders who will battle to the end and strikers who can cause damage. Well done to all involved.

Senior Men — 08/09 Season Preview

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Youghal United Seniors will kick off their new season on Saturday, August 23rd at Avondale Park when they take on FAI intermediate cup holders Avondale United with a 6pm kick off.

Like most teams, the Seniors have been hampered by bad weather and could only manage one pre-season game, when they beat Blackwater Rangers 3-1. Manager Michael Durken would have wished for a better build-up to the new season, and will have to use the two Keane Cup games as a lead-up to the start of the league.

United will be at home on next Thursday night, August 28th, when they play Ringmahon Rangers and will be away to Tramore in the last game.

Junior Men — 08/09 Season Preview

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

United’s Junior team go into action this Friday night, August 22nd at 7pm, when they face local rivals Midleton in the League Cup at Knockgriffin park.

This match will be a tough start for this young team, which only got together in recent weeks under the management of John Heafey and Pat Macarthy.

United will then be home on Tuesday, August 26th, when they play St. Mary’s of Cork in their second league cup tie. Like the Seniors, these two games will be a help to the Junior team, as they had no pre-season games.

Schoolboys/girls Updates

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

All schoolboys/girls teams are now training for the start of the season.

United’s U16s are under new management this season with new coaches Eugene Crotty, Jamie Lawton and Ken Dempsey. The couaches have been very impressed with the  squad so far in training.

The U16s had two friendles arranged but they fell to the weather. The team is training three days a week at the moment and hopefully this will be a benfit to them when the new season starts in a few weeks. If the weather improves we hope to have two games by the middle of next week.

The new schoolboys season starts August 30th.

For the 08/09 season Youghal United have U11, U12, U13, U14 and U16 Schoolboy teams, as well as U12, U14 and U16 Schoolgirls teams.

Check back soon for updates on each team as the season gets underway.
