Youghal United U16 Girls Win League Title

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Report: Richard Sheehan

Youghal Utd. 4 Douglas Hall 2

May 26, 2009

The Youghal girls lined out against Douglas Hall in a must win game, on the final day of the under 16 Cork schoolgirls league. Youghal needed a win to clinch their very first league title. Tension was high just before kickoff, with a large turnout supporting the Youghal girls. Youghal started off the better and had most of the play for the first 10 minutes or so, but it was the Douglas Hall girls that got the breakthrough when a ball over the Youghal defence was taken by Laura Shine of Douglas Hall, to finish to the top right hand corner of the Youghal goal. This had the effect of settling the Youghal team and they started to play some good football, but were aware of the threat from another breakaway goal. It was only a matter of time before the Youghal goal came, this came from the boot of Gemma Lyons who scored the equaliser and sent Youghal on their first step towards the League title. Play continued with some good football from both sides and Youghal got a penalty when one of the Douglas Hall girls handled the ball inside the box. Up stepped Lisa O’Sullivan and she calmly put the ball past the Hall keeper to make it 2 to 1 at half time.

The second half started with the Youghal girls sensing they could go on and win it, but the Douglas girls had other ideas, and made them fight for it all the way. Youghal were the next to score when Lisa O’Sullivan scrambled the ball past the Douglas Hall keeper to give them a comfortable 3 to 1 lead. This comfort zone lasted for all of 3 minutes when a good move from Douglas Hall saw Laura Shine score for the visitors, and raise the tension again. Both teams battled for the next score and Youghal were rewarded when Lisa O’Sullivan got the breakthrough to make it 4 to 2.

With about 8 minutes left Douglas hall made a break through the now tiring Youghal defence to go one on one with Shannon Crowley in the Youghal goal, where Shannon made the save of the day to deny the score, and she was called into action almost immediately when the clearance came straight back in, and looked like a sure score but Shannon Crowley somehow got her hands to the shot and turned the ball past the Youghal post. At this stage both teams had given their all and it was the Youghal girls that hung on, with the aid of their supporters, to clinch victory and their first schoolgirls league title for the club. Well done to all the Youghal girls, and well done to Douglas Hall for a thrilling final game to the season.

Beamish Senior Cup Semifinal

Report: Anthony Horgan

Douglas Hall 1 – 2 Youghal United

Brendan O’ Sullivan

Shane Ryan

Not many people gave Youghal a hope in this massive tie away to Premier division side Douglas Hall. Let’s put Douglas Hall into context they have enjoyed a good run in the FAI cup this season, beat Rockmout twice and finished third in the premier league behind winners Avondale and second place Rockmount. We are currently 19 league places behind them and could not possible expect to get anything from the game. A respectable score line is all we could have hoped for but at the end of the day it was a cup tie and anything can happen.

Youghal United went up to Cork on Friday 22nd May with nothing to lose after capturing second place in division two to be promoted. This would have been the icing on the cake and it turned out that way. Youghal took the lead when Brendan O’ Sullivan scored inside ten minutes. Douglas came back at us and were on level terms after 20 mins.

The home side enjoyed plenty of possession playing the ball in front of the Youghal midfield although a lot of chasing was involved Douglas Hall rarely got to penetrate the Youghal back four. With the game heading towards extra time up stepped young Shane Ryan to hammer the ball home and put Youghal United into a senior cup final next Sunday 31st May.

What a great season the lads had with being promoted and getting to a senior cup final against St.Mary’s another premier division side. Well done to all involved.

Youghal United 3 – 1 College Corinthians

Michael John Hennessy x 2

Shane Ryan

Youghal ran out winners in this tricky tie at home on Friday 18th May to division 1 side College Corinthians. After accounting for Carrigaline in the previous round Youghal again had another first division side to contend with. The lads started the better and put pressure on the away side early on. United kept the ball and knocked it around very well , Brendan O’ Sullivan was a thorn in the opposition side throughtout. Youghal found themselves one up mid way through the first half when Michael John Hennessy broke the offside to slot the ball home. A lead that they deserved and one they protected to the half time break.

Youghal started the second half as they finished the first showing some slick passing and playing really well. College rarely threatened the Youghal goal and that has to be down to the terrific layout and balance in the side. Twenty minutes into the half and Youghal extended their lead with a fine finish from substitute Shane Ryan after some good work down the left by Brendan O Sullivan. You would think this was game over but it seemed to spur on the away side who were enjoying more possession and putting Youghal under attack.

They had balls go narrowly wide and some good saves by David Kearns. Eventually with ten minutes to go they got a goal and with the scare at 2-1 it was going to be a nervous finish. To Youghal’s credit they did hold out to keep college at bay and at the death had another goal from M.J Hennessy.

This sees Youghal with a huge task away to Douglas Hall but these are the games we want to be involved in.

Youghal United U10’s at Clashmore Tournament

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Report by John Connelly

Youghal United brought a strong squad of fourteen players to their first competitive fixture of the year.

The team held their own against an experienced Clashmore side in the first match, which ended in a 2-0 defeat.

The Youghal boys were determined to come home with a win, and managed a gutsy 1-0 victory against Valley Rangers, with Sean Smiddy providing the winning goal.

The final match of the group stage against Ardmore was a tight game, with Ardmore running out 1-0 winners. That meant Ardmore progressed to the cup semi-final whilst Youghal entered the semi-final of the shield.

Youghal built up a 2-0 lead against Clashmore’s second team before losing 3-2. Leo Nunn and Adam Bullman were the Youghal goal scorers.

A big thanks to those parents who assisted with lifts on the day, and despite a disappointing finish the day was enjoyed by all.

Squad: Kevin Anderson, Fionn Cliffe, Jordan Yellop, Zac Downing, Tony Flavin, Adam Bullman, Leo Nunn, Calum Coleman, Sean Smiddy, Eoin Connelly, Sean O’Brien, Liam Forrest, Conor Kennedy

Youghal United U8’s at Clashmore Tournament

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Report by Tommy Kenefick

Youghal United found themselves in an evenly matched group with Ballybridge of Cappoquin and Dungarvan United. With goalkeeper Andrew Foley in top form, and with the defence made up of the outstanding Ruairi McMahon, Mikey Lyons , James Lane, Jack Kenneally  and Shane Geary, Youghal never looked like conceding a goal in either of their matches.

The fact that the only goal conceded by Youghal in the two games came from a deflected shot against a very strong Dungarvan side was a great credit to the Youghal outfit. With Adam Hennessy marshalling midfield superbly, and both Keith O’Connor, James Varney and Christian Persaud working tirelessly and skillfully in both midfield and attack, Youghal threatened to score on numerous occasions, only to come up against some resolute defending and excellent goalkeeping from Dungarvan and Ballybridge.

After two matches played, both Youghal and Ballybridge were tied on points, requiring the most dramatic of penalty shoot-outs to break the deadlock.

Both goalkeepers kept up their magnificent form to keep out penalty after penalty, all of which were well struck and on target. A fantastic penalty from the ice-cool James Varney brought the penalty shoot-out to sudden death.

Andrew Foley brought off the save of the tournament to prolong the shoot-out, until finally Ballybridge prevailed to go through to the semi-final.

The lads did themselves and their club proud in their first-ever tournament, and will have greater days ahead.

Squad: Andrew Foley, Ruairi McMahon, Mikey Lyons, James Lane, James Varney, Shane Geary, Jack Kennaelly, Christian Persaud, Aoife Geary, Keith O’Connor (Vice Captain), Adam Hennessy (Captain).

Youghal United U7’s at Clashmore Tournament

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Report by T. Kennedy

After a late withdrawal from the tournament by another club, Youghal United were asked if they would split their U7 side into two teams to balance out the group.

Youghal obliged, and their two U7 sides played their way into an all-Youghal final.

Emmett Perry’s U7’s cruised through the group stage with three impressive victories, beating Cappoquin FC 5-0, Youghal’s other U7’s 2-0, and Clashmore 2-0.

T. Kennedy’s Youghal U7’s had a tougher road to the final, first losing to Clashmore 2-0 and Youghal 2-0, before getting on track with a 5-1 win over Cappoquin. With a semi-final date with Clashmore looming, the Youghal boys dug deep, and came away with a stunning 3-0 victory.

The Youghal vs Youghal final was a hotly contested affair, filled with crunching tackles, silky smooth passing, and blistering shots on goal.

The final score was Youghal 2 – 1 Youghal, with Adam Danaher earning Player of the Tournament honours.

Squad: Paul Delaney, Cian Hennessy, Cullan Morrisey, Luke Kennedy, Ross Bullman, Leon Hennessy, Matthew Hogan, Tony McCarthy, Paul Hennessy, David Murphy, Aidan Kelly, John Murphy, Jordan Lupton, Jake McCarthy, Adam Danaher, Conor Kenefick, Tomas Power, Cian Coleman-Butler, Aidan Perry.
